Last Thursday, May 25th, a midtown east block was overtaken by a rally and two counter-protests. The primary event was a rally hoping to get CUNY to change their mind about the key-note invitation to Hijabi Muslim activist Linda Sarsour, who is said have ties to terrorist groups like Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood. The two counter-protest groups were the Neturei Karta and the “NO!” group.
The rally was organized by activist Pamela Geller, president of American Freedom Defense Initiative (AFDI). She also served as the presenter to the speakers for the event. The first speaker was NYS assemblyman Dov Hikind. Hikind is an Orthodox Jew and Zionist whose district is located in predominantly Hasidic Orthodox Boro Park, Brooklyn. The next speaker was John Guandolo whose knowledge about Sharia and Islam comes from a military and law enforcement background. Egyptian-born, Nonie Darwish passionately spoke about how she escaped Sharia. When she said she did not want to live under it again, you could really see the anxiety on her face, in her eyes and even in her body.
While Dr. David Wood was in college, his best friend and roommate, Nabeel, was an Ahmadi Muslim who tried to convert him. David ended up converting not only Nabeel, but several more Muslims out of the religion. The Muslims threatened all of these who left, as well as Wood, Wood's mother, wife and children. The most popular speaker was saved for last. Milo Yiannopoulos is a comedic, political provocateur. Milo's reasons for opposing Sharia are simple. He is aware that, as a gay man, Sharia law dictates he be either beheaded or thrown off of a roof. As a Brit, he has seen up close a Western nation further along than the USA in Islamification.
Across the street, was the Neturei Karta Hasidim-the NKs for short. They are a fringe group. They dress like Hasidim. They come to the Celebrate Israel parade every year. People rolls their eyes at them. The group was founded in Jerusalem, but now protest anything even remotely zionistic. Their beef is that they feel the messiah has not come and they feel the messiah should set up a Jewish state in Israel, not the Jewish people. As a side note, most Jews do not believe the messiah has come. The Jews who believe that are, like the NKs, considered to be on the fringe.
The remaining group from Thursday was a group that goes by or is called several names. Their signs often have the word "no" on them repeatedly, so some may call them the "no" group. They are the antifa, black block, revolutionary workers party, Soros-funded, Ultra-left wing, Communist Party USA (CPUSA)-affiliated, #resist and refuse fascism. They are a cousin group, so-to-speak of Bay-area By Any Means Necessary (BAMN). Just a reminder, BAMN was the group that caused $500k of damages in a Berkeley campus riot last February when black block decided to prevent Milo Yiannopoulos from a speaking engagement on campus. Throughout the entire event, they enjoyed being obnoxious. At their noisiest, one person banged a pen on the police barricades while fighting back a giant smile, a guy banged an umbrella on those same barricades and three different people blew police whistles. As with throughout the whole protest, members of the group chanted various accusations at the American group, the most humorous of which was "How do you spell homophobe? M! I! L! O!" referring to the featured speaker who is a gay Brit. Additionally, they initially mispronounced it to Mee-Low instead of My-low. Basic fact-checking for $100, Alex?
The three groups from Thursday have now been explained in a neutral manner. In a future post, contrasts between what was reported in the mainstream media and what is supported by online evidence will reveal further details about the event and the people who attended it.
